It's true, the default value for the register_globals directive in
php.ini-dist is now off, not on. The examples don't depend on
register_globals, the actual text does. Am changing docs now.

I found on page
http://www.php.net/manual/en/features.http-auth.php
an explanation of how to use $PHP_AUTH_USER to
authenticate a user. Unfortunately, in PHP 4.2.1, this
variable is no longer in use, as shown on page
http://www.php.net/manual/en/reserved.variables.php#reserved.variables.server
