Aren't the return values just the standard Unix C values?

Subject: [PHP] ret_val of exec() call

I get the ret_val of exec() call. It's 255. I don't know how to interpret
it. I can't find in the online manual about what each of ret_val corresponds
to. Does anyone know where is the reference for that? thanks
