um,
but the thing is it's their intellectual property, and that would be
stealing.
mapquest has done three things:
-partenered with some mapping database provider (the datasource) which
probably stores its maps as postscript or soemthing.
-built software which can rapidly query that source and rasterize to
gif.
-built an interface for talking to the query engine
PHP is good for the last thing.
