addslashes is just to escape those things that need escaping like quotes, it
won't do this job. For future reference to anyone else with the same
problem - the answer was this:
$foo="\\n\\n--- quoted ------------\\n>".str_replace("\r\n","\\n>",$foo)
which is more or less what Philip Diller kindly posted and provides me with
a single line of text suitable for use in a javascript variable written by
php.
