Patrick,
    You need to use the checked option.

    (I haven't tested this so let me know if it worked right for you.)
    eg.
        $f->add_element(array("type"=>"checkbox",
                "name"=>"compress",
                "checked"=>$compress,
                "multiple"=>1));
