To make the transitions a little easier, I would suggest keeping personal
modifications in a separate file and using those modifications as an
extension of the PHPLIB class. In this system your prepend.php includes your
extention files which in turn include the PHPLIB files.

You still have to double check your code against the new release, but you
won't 'lose' enhancements.
