RE: [phplib] Text file database From: Ken Chew (ken <email protected>)

Thanks for the respond so far. I think my question wasn't clear the first
time and too many sub-points that distracts. Shall not respond individually
but will try to summarise.

I wanted to design a system that "poor man" can use.
Now my definition of "poor man" (note quotes) is that either they are limited
in resources (don't own a server for example), limited in skill (don't know
how to set up), limited time/patience (don't want to spend too much time
figuring out) or some combinations.

This group includes individual, small intranet or even small businesses. They
probably use a shared server (virtual hosting). Or if they run their own
server, installed stock packages.

Now not all shared server provide PHP and MySQL. I know of some who just
provide PHP.

For people who want to install on their own server, set up Apache-PHP-MySQL,
I am not so worried. In fact if they can do that, there are other
applications out there like Zope, Midgard which are more advance, though I
envision Phratry to be "up there" someday.

Basically I had been along that "poor man"'s path and I think this is a space
we can contribute.

The question I ask myself and hope to get as feedback is

Should the minimum requirement be just PHP, which means I need to use flat
file. Do you think this minimum requirement is helpful or do you think most
people who use PHP use MySQL anyway and we shouldn't bother.

Assuming I choose to support flat file, is there some function like DBI-DBD
in perl where you can drop in a driver whether you use text file or database?
Note I had already decided on PHP, I cite perl DBI as example since I'm
familar with it.

Since this is the phplib list, I try to stay relevent by asking if phplib can
do that. :)

Thanks!

Ken
