For the interest of those also affected by this problem, the solution is to
edit template.inc and replace this line:
$str = preg_replace($reg, "{$name}", $str);
with this one:
$str = preg_replace($reg, "\{$name}", $str);
It appears this is a quirk of PHP4, as mentioned in the TODO.
