As far as the phplib/pear merge, I'm not all that sure that it will happen (at
least from the sourceforge project that was mentioned :)). It has been
mentioned VERY recently (like yesterday) that the Pear::DB class will NOT use
mysql's auto increment fields. Since I personally use those a LOT, I'm not
sure how much sense it makes to do a PHPLib/Pear merge... However, there may
still be pieces of Pear that we want to put in. I don't know... (and since I
haven't had the time up until probably two days ago to work on it. :( no real
movement has happened. :() Don't know.. ;)

That's all very up in the air. Work is being done to PEARify the current 7.2c release (it's at sourceforge, pear-phplib is the project name, i think), the PEAR folks don't really like phplib (the API) and there has been static in the past on how to best make everyone happy. To that end several phplib users on this list have stepped up to maintain phplib, I assume until such time as the PEAR port work is as bug free, robust, stable and fast as the current phplib release, which may be never :)
