RE: [phplib] The future of PHPlib From: Chris Johnson (chris <email protected>)

A number of us are working on a 7.2d release of PHPLIB. This will be a
small incremental release mostly incorporating fixes to known bugs, and
including some new contributed software.

I believe there are enough of us who are using PHPLIB in a fashion which
makes it important to us, and so it we can continue to support it
ourselves for quite some time to come. It appears the fine people at
NetUse are willing to support the web site and source code repository
(CVS) for quite some time to come, as well.

There are also a number of us who are interested in creating a release
beyond the 7.2d release. It would likely be called 7.3. It would
include new features which have been implemented by others in their own
code already, and possibly new features not yet developed.

I am coordinating the packaging of the 7.2d release.

I'm also interested in seeing a "supported" release which contains the
PHP4 native sessions -- this may or may not make it into 7.2d. Whether
it does depends upon the wishes of those working on the release.

If you are interested in helping out, or if you are interested in just
seeing what development is taking place, I suggest joining the PHPLIB
developers mailing list. The web site contains instructions.

Anyone who feels themselves capable of making helpful contributions is
certainly welcome to help out. You do not need to be a guru programmer.
We will need testing done, especially on platforms and systems that the
developers do not have access to. You can always help improve the
documentation and bring it up to date with the code, as well.

I believe PHP and PHPLIB will remain a viable combination for low volume
web sites for a number of years to come. If someone develops a
multi-threaded application engine for PHP, it would become viable for
high volume web sites as well.

I hope this helps answer a few questions for people who are wondering
about the future of PHPLIB itself.

I personally can't say what will happen with PEAR, but it also does not
matter very much. PHPLIB by itself, as it is today, will be around for
a while. It works well and a lot of people are using it.
