You would need a signed/secure Java applet to do anything remotely like
this. JavaScript, which other than a passing syntactical resemblance to
Java has nothing to do with the Java language, has NO file input/output
capabilities whatsoever.
Actually, you could use any kind of applet that was written in a
language that can do serial port I/O. For example, VisualBasic is a
possibility. But then you run into the problem any applet or plug-in
writer has: making it work on more than one platform. That's why for
anything other than Java applets, things like Quicktime and Flash
plug-ins all require you to download a version specific to your
platform, e.g. Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.
