For the sake of completeness, I'd like to indicate my eventual solution
to this. I added a hidden variable named "submit_p" (the "_p" indicating
that it's a boolean variable, a LISP holdover, but very handy when
glancing over a lot of code), value="1", and I check for it with:

if ($HTTP_POST_VARS['submit_p'])

BTW, I tried the 'fusebox' method being described here, and while I had
limited success, I want to point out to those considering it that it
takes quite a bit of planning and engineering to pull it off with high
success. The folks who originally came up with the concept are in the
process of fleshing it out a bit further, as their initial conception
was not robust enough to account for large and complex sites.
