set_var() doesn't conform to PEAR guidelines, so it

I do worry.

That's right for classes like Auth, Perm and so on, but
not for Template, which is able to live standalone. So
I ported it.

Can't see any improvements when moving to SF. It buys
you nothing at the moment.
