    The original intention of the license was that it should
    indeed apply to software which is supposed to be linked to
    propietary code. Then Richard Stallman recognized that the
    momentum of the Free Software movement was large enough for
    his purpose, and issued a call to relicense all software
    under the GPL. At the same time, he announced that the
    former Library GPL would become the Lesser GPL where
    ``lesser´´ refers to the quality (amount of freedom you are
    granted) of the LGPL when compared to the one, true GPL.

    Some people, including me, still refer to the LGPL as Library
    GPL, because they disagree on RMS's interpretation of
    "freedom" in this context. His version of freedom is highly
    philosophical and remains impractical on many accounts.
