There's a school of thought which says that mixing your drinks is a sure
recipe for a sore head. i.e. if you choose to go the open source route,
stick with open source: i.e. PHP/Perl + MySQL/Postgres; if you go
commercial, stick with commercial: ASP/CFM + SQLServer/Oracle etc. The
rationale for this is that you will get lots of support from the open
source community if you have PHP / MySql problems, but very little help
with PHP / SQLServer; similarly, if you ask Oracle for help with PHP,
you'll get short shrift. Bit of an oversimplification, but worth
thinking about.

Life of course gets more interesting with the release of industry
strength databases like InterBase and SAPdb (ex ADABAS-D) into the open
source community. These are fine products - similar quality to the DB/2s
and Oracles - but if the former owners aren't getting revenue from them,
how much support will they provide - and will the open source community
embrace them whole-heartedly?

Good luck with your evaluation - John
