RE: [PHP3] PHP3 vs. Cold Fusion From: Adrian Teasdale (adrian <email protected>)
Date: 01/02/99

Austin,

We have been thinking about moving from Cold Fusion to PHP for quite a
few months now. I have been lurking on this list and doing some
experimentation with PHP, and I've asked myself the following
questions....

Who would be building the apps? Coming from a non-programming background
I found that it was quite easy to develop something quickly using CF. I
have found PHP more difficult to 'get in to', however, it's power and
flexibility is obvious.

How much support and initial hand-holding would you/your colleagues
require? Both CF and PHP have a sizeable user base and good, friendly
mailing lists. I would say, however, that CF has the edge in terms of
documentation with easy-to-follow examples (based on my own lack of
programming knowledge I've found it easier). This will only be be a
matter of time though, as I've heard two people on this list talk about
PHP books nearly ready for release.....

What about scaleability? From what I can gather, again coming from a
non-technical background, PHP and Unix is a much more stable platform
than NT. Plus, PHP will run on BOTH NT and Unix, whereas CF is primarily
NT, with one version running under Solaris (I think)

What about cost? Now, I don't just mean the cost of PHP and the cost of
CF. I'm talking about the cost of other applications, server set-up etc
etc. We have a dedicated NT server and the cost of the software (FTP,
Mail etc) has come to quite a high price. I can honestly say that if I
had come across PHP before CF, then on this issue alone I would have gone
the Unix and PHP route. Also, are you wanting to distribute your apps?
If so, you will have to include the cost of CF into any budget which can
push the price up considerably.

I'm not sure if I've answered your question enough, or given you more
things to think about, but I don't think that there is an easy answer. I
think that both packages have their advantages and disadvantages, and
it's up to you to decide which is best for you (and everyone else within
your company).

all the best

Ade
