uhmm... i don't recall the : being added to work like you're using it.
Your code should really look more like this:
<?php
        $var1="A";
        $var2="X";
        if ($var1=="A" || $var2 =="B") {
                echo "true";
        } else {
                echo "false";
        }
?>
