[PHP3] RE: (Fwd) Virus alert forwarded From: Burgett, Wade (Wadeb <email protected>)
Date: 01/13/99

I've recieved this message from several people in the last couple of days.
This is an interesting topic to me because these messages are a form of
virus in one sense, and yet they do not eat anything except Internet
Bandwidth and peoples time.

There is no danager to your computer by reading a message. The only way you
can get viruses is through attached files that are executable, or from
Microsoft Office documents (the sophisticated embedded programming languages
in the MS Office suite allow viruses to be created).

However, these messages do behave like viruses in the sense that they are
replicated by the people that forward them to others. They are, in the
truest sense, a virus, although they replicate their structure the same way
"culture viruses" work in society. They enter a host, infect him with data,
and he starts producing copies of that data (Politcal movements and
religious cults are an excellent example of this kind of virus propagation).

The only defense against these viruses is knowledge and the delete key.
