Luke,
I don't really reply to this list, but this is really irritating me.
As long as one of the sites below doesn't use Colin's code, or his images, or his
copy then it is completely legal unless he decides to get a patent on it. (This is
actually an exciting area of law that is opening up.) A few of the ones below are
actually probably using his work without authorization, and that is a shame.
Also, perception.net is using a layered/dynamic css solution for search. That has
nothing to do with Colin unless he has a patent on a curved rectangle box with a
search field in it. (Which I doubt!) Second, it is quite conceviable that the
designer of that site got to it without looking at PHP's site. It's quite simple
approach, though there are some questionable elements to it, like the attatchment
to the vertical mast. However, that is still quite legal. Check the precedents.
Also, IBM's site had something very similar months before with a layer containing a
search form. (Granted it wasn't connected to the mast, but an auto-on/off on the
mast of the form). So should Colin have used it? By your logic, Colin ripped off
IBM.
Sell-it-here, has a box inside a box. The color is reminiscent of Colin's design,
but there are only so many colors, but not a rip-off
webjuggler -- used Colin's idea
gal-or -- L shaped nav, very reminscent, but L shaped nav's have been around since
the start of the web
freeflesh -- can't see anything even remotely resembling PHP's site
wbt.net/java -- search graphic might have been taken, but it might be a common font
frenchtouch -- this is an example of a copy (authorized or not)
winet.de -- This isn't breaking any laws (unless graphics/code have been copied),
and face it, people like the design. In fact the designer of this site liked it so
much, he spent a lot of time redoing it on his end for his site.
gx.cn -- copy, but as long as no scripts/images of colin's are used it's fine.
Lay off it. Stick to the blatent ones that are using un-authorized resources.
It's libel for you to post messages like that when it is not true. Simple/elegant
ideas/solutions spread. That is the whole point of OSS/Unix/Internet.

PS. Really early in the morning, not usually this argumentative, but enough is
enough.
