I believe the original poster said he was using the Netscape SDK, not
OpenLDAP. I'd recommend trying the OpenLDAP library - it works well for me
under AIX 4.2.1.

I believe openldap was very picky about what I was compiling it with. (I
needed to upgrade some things on LinuxPPC before it would compile.) I
think the thing that made a difference is I switched to egcs-1.1.2.
