Re: [PHP3] Macintosh PHP Editor (was: Re: [PHP3] Visual Editor?) From: Nick Zukin (nickz <email protected>)

I use BBEdit a lot -- A LOT. In fact, I use their simpletext
redirector and have all basic text files open up in it. I even use
it for most things people would use Word or Wordperfect for.

However, it has some serious limitations. The main one is that its
extensibility is very limited. A comparable program on PC is
EditPlus 2. But it allows XML style extensions for syntax coloring
and there are tons of them. With BBEdit you're stuck with what Bare
Bones gives you, which is paltry.

Alpha seems to be getting away from that. Plus, with its Emacs-ness
you can automate a lot more and with a built-in robust language, Tcl,
you should be able to do a lot more as well. I prefer the ease of
XML that EditPlus 2 uses, but Tcl is much better than the nothing
that BBedit provides. And if I knew Tcl I'm sure I'd be in 7th heaven.

BBedit is a little less klunky and a little more stable, it seems.
But that may be because I'm using OS 9. I haven't had any crashes,
but I've had some weird stalls and ghosting here and there with
Alpha. BBedit runs flawlessly.

If you like BBedit, though, I'd give Alpha a try. It's shareware
that's free for 30 days, $30 thereafter.

It looks like it really could be a great alternative that just
doesn't have enough people using it.

I love my Mac and I'll use anything that gives me a good reason to
use my PC less.
