dealing with the database.
There are plenty of PHP abstraction layers out there for oracle, but to be
honest they all suck (or at least the ones I saw).
we used something off the web, and heavily modified it, but managing the DB
connections was kind of a headache.
that doesn't say anything about PHP, it just means for my next project I'll
be commissioning a 'god' to write me a serious abstraction layer, and
provide guidelines for its use. assuming I like it, I'll put it out.
other than that, generally getting logic out of CF was ok, but CF is messy
as hell, and we had to do a lot of cleanup.
a lack of 'embedded' date functions in PHP 3 was a bummer... we built our
own which are ok, but in my opinion not publishable, yet :)
the site is roughly 10 times faster now. I'm not bullshitting, those are
real response numbers. it was surprising even to me :)
I intend to stick with PHP for all future projects.
best,
-alex
