Informix is indeed a commercial database and as such I believe there was a
trial version for Linux www.intraware.com but not a free one.

I use Informix for our main database and have the 4GL RDS suite which I use
to write most of our programs in for speed. I also use PHP to pull
information from it and format in a 'pretty' way using an easy to use web
interface for some of our "how does this calculator work?" users. So far
it's not let me down.

If you are looking for a database purely for web stuff and can do without
transactions and all the bell's and whistles then I'd advise Mysql. You've
probably noticed the odd post about it here :-)

I've also found there doesn't seem to be anywhere near as many of us
Informix kiddies about compared to Oracle. Something perhaps to consider.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Paul
