NT4, Apache 1.3.11, PHP4 RC2-dev

When I type in an URL like my.server.dom/nonexistent.html
I get proper 404 document. However, if I change the suffix
to php4 (AddType'd in Apache) I get
Fatal error: Unable to open ... in Unknown on line 0

I realize this is an Apache issue, but how can this be
corrected?
