PHP4 includes MySQL by default (and it's easy to disable it with
--without-mysql
at your configure line. PHP4 actually comes with a MySQL client nowadays, so
you should have been able to build it anyway. Perhaps you could log this
compile failure in the bug database?

BTW, MySQL is free for most of the stuff we're likely to be doing, and is
cheap compared to the "big boys" when you actually need a liscence. See
